Your first ten minutes
- Water off.Use the fixture's own valve if the problem is at one sink, toilet or heater. Otherwise close the main where the line enters the house — usually the garage, a utility area or an exterior wall — or the valve in the meter box near the street, which needs a meter key.
- Power off, if water is near it. Standing water anywhere near outlets, a breaker panel or an electric water heater means killing power to that area at the breaker before you walk in. If water is coming down through a ceiling, do this before you stand under it.
- Gas: leave first, call from outside. If you smell gas or hear hissing at a connection, do not switch anything on or off. Get everyone out and call your gas utility from outside the building.
- Stop using water in a sewage backup. If sewage is coming up at the lowest drain, every gallon used anywhere in the house makes it worse — no toilets, no washing machine, no dishwasher.
- Then tell us what happened. Your address, what is failing, whether the water is off, and the approximate age of the home. That is what makes the callback fast and the quote accurate.
What counts as an emergency
Call now, or book it for Tuesday?
Not everything that is wrong is urgent, and treating a routine repair as an emergency usually just costs more. Here is the honest split.
Deal with it now
- A burst or split pipe, or water you cannot stop
- Sewage backing up at the lowest drain, or several fixtures backing up at once
- A water heater tank that has split and is emptying
- No water at all in the house, or water that has stopped and come back brown
- Water running across a floor or down through a ceiling in a slab home
- Any smell of gas — that one is an evacuate-and-call, not a plumbing booking
Urgent, but it can be scheduled
- One slow or blocked drain, with the rest of the house fine
- No hot water, with nothing leaking
- A running toilet or a dripping faucet — annoying and wasteful, not an emergency
- A warm spot on the floor or a climbing water bill with no visible water — a likely slab leak, worth prompt leak detection
- A weeping relief valve on the water heater, or pipes that bang — usually a pressure problem to get looked at soon
