How to Stop a Burst Pipe (Step by Step)

A burst pipe can put out hundreds of gallons an hour, so the order of operations matters. Work through these steps quickly: stop the water first, then the power, then damage control.

1. Shut off the main water valve. This is the single most important step because it stops water to the whole house. Turn it fully clockwise, or a quarter turn for a lever valve.
2. Open faucets to drain the system. Turn on the lowest cold-water faucets in the house and flush toilets to drain the pipes and relieve pressure, which slows the leak at the break.
3. Kill the power if water is near outlets, fixtures, or the electrical panel. Shut off the affected circuits, or the main breaker, before you step into standing water. If the panel itself is wet, do not touch it; call an electrician or the utility.
4. Turn off the water heater. With the main off, cut power or gas to the water heater so it does not run dry and overheat.
5. Move belongings and start removing water. Get furniture, electronics, and boxes off wet floors, and mop or wet-vac standing water to limit damage while help is on the way.
