Toilet Replacement Cost

A like-for-like swap is one of the cheapest plumbing jobs there is. The things that make it expensive are all under the floor.

By the Dallas Best Plumber Editorial TeamLast updated October 2026

Fixr.com puts toilet installation at a national average of $450, with a typical range of $250 to $800 and labor alone at $150 to $440. A straight like-for-like replacement sits near the bottom of that. What pushes it higher is a damaged closet flange, a rotted or wet subfloor, a non-standard rough-in, or moving the drain - the last of which is a different project entirely.

We are a free referral service, not a plumbing company - we do not set prices and we never publish a price as our own. Below is what independent cost-data publishers report nationally, named and linked with the dates they were updated. The useful thing about this particular job is that the published ranges are fairly tight, which tells you it is predictable work when nothing is wrong underneath.

Why Two Quotes For The Same Toilet Differ

The fixture is the part you choose and the part you can price yourself at any home center. Everything that makes one quote higher than another is either the condition of what the old toilet was sitting on, or how the job is scoped.

  • The closet flange. This is the ring the toilet bolts to and seals against. If it is cracked, corroded, or sitting below the finished floor after someone tiled over the old surface, it has to be repaired, extended or replaced before a new toilet will seal - and that is the single most common reason a simple swap becomes a bigger invoice.
  • The subfloor. If the old toilet was leaking at the base for a while, the deck under it may be soft. A plumber will not set a new fixture on a floor that cannot hold the bolts, and repairing it is carpentry rather than plumbing.
  • The rough-in dimension. Standard is 12 inches from the finished wall to the closet bolts, but 10-inch and 14-inch rough-ins exist, especially in older houses. The wrong rough-in means a limited fixture selection or moving the drain.
  • Whether the drain has to move. Relocating a toilet means rerouting both the waste line and the vent, and on a slab foundation - which is most of the Dallas area - that means breaking and patching concrete. This is a remodel, not a replacement.
  • The angle stop and supply line. A seized or weeping shut-off valve behind the toilet is cheap to replace while everything is apart and expensive to deal with later. Most plumbers will recommend it; make sure you know whether it is in the price.
  • Fixture choice. Fixr puts a two-piece installed at $200 to $950 and a one-piece at $250 to $1,100. Comfort height, elongated bowls, skirted trapways and wall-hung or smart toilets all move the number, and some need different carrier or supply arrangements.
  • Disposal of the old fixture - Fixr lists $50 to $200 where it is charged separately.
  • Whether more than one is being done. Replacing three toilets in one visit costs far less per toilet than three separate trips, because the mobilization is shared.

Repair Or Replace?

Not every toilet problem is a replacement. Fixr's plumber cost guide puts toilet repair at $60 to $200 and Inch Calculator's 2026 guide at $150 to $300, against a $450 national average to install a new one - so for a running fill valve, a worn flapper, a failed tank-to-bowl gasket or a wax ring, repair is usually the right call and the parts are inexpensive.

Replacement starts making sense for a different set of reasons. A cracked bowl or tank cannot be repaired. A toilet that has been rebuilt more than once, or one where parts are no longer available, is throwing good money after bad. A pre-1994 fixture uses considerably more water per flush than current models, and in a household with several toilets that shows up on the bill. And if the flange or the subfloor needs work anyway, the toilet is coming off regardless - at which point the labor is already spent and a new fixture only adds the fixture.

The one case where replacement is clearly the better value is a toilet that blocks repeatedly despite a clear line. Low-flow designs from the first generation of 1.6-gallon fixtures were genuinely poor at clearing the bowl, and no amount of plunging fixes a bad trapway design. A modern fixture with a good flush rating solves a problem that is otherwise permanent.

What To Ask For In A Quote

This is a job where the quote should be explicit about the things that are not visible yet, because that is where the change orders come from.

  1. The fixture by model, and whether it is supplied by you or by the plumber.
  2. The rough-in dimension measured at your wall, not assumed.
  3. What happens if the closet flange needs repair or an extender, with a price for that contingency rather than a shrug.
  4. What happens if the subfloor is soft, and whether the plumber does that work or you need a carpenter.
  5. Whether a new angle stop and supply connector are included.
  6. Removal and disposal of the old toilet.
  7. Warranty on labor as well as the fixture, and whether the plumber returns if the new seal weeps.
  8. If you are replacing more than one, the price for doing them together.

A Note On Slab Foundations

Most houses across Dallas, Plano, Garland, Richardson, Irving, Mesquite, Carrollton and the newer Collin and Denton County suburbs sit on post-tensioned or conventionally reinforced slabs on expansive clay soil. That matters here in two ways.

First, moving a toilet is disproportionately expensive on a slab. The waste line is cast into or under the concrete, so relocating the fixture means breaking the slab, rerouting pipe, re-pouring and refinishing - and on a post-tensioned slab the cables have to be located before anyone cuts. If a bathroom layout change is on your list, price that separately and early; it is not a toilet replacement with an adjustment.

Second, a toilet that has quietly leaked at its base on a slab has been wetting the ground under the concrete rather than a visible deck. That is worth mentioning to whoever quotes the work, because the flange condition and the moisture under the flooring are the two things that decide whether this is a $450-class job or something larger. Lift a corner of the vinyl or check the grout line if you can.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a toilet?

Fixr.com (updated January 28, 2026) gives a national average of $450 including materials and labor, with a typical range of $250 to $800 and labor alone at $150 to $440. Those are third-party national figures, not our prices and not DFW-specific. A straight like-for-like swap sits near the lower end; flange or subfloor repair is what pushes it up.

Why would a toilet replacement cost more than the published range?

Almost always the closet flange or the subfloor. A cracked or corroded flange, or one sitting below the finished floor after a tile job, has to be repaired or extended before a new toilet will seal. A subfloor softened by a long-running base leak needs carpentry. A non-standard 10-inch or 14-inch rough-in limits fixture choice, and relocating the drain on a slab is a remodel rather than a replacement.

Is it cheaper to repair a toilet or replace it?

Repair, for most faults. Fixr puts toilet repair at $60 to $200 and Inch Calculator at $150 to $300, against a $450 average to install a new one, and a fill valve, flapper, tank gasket or wax ring is inexpensive. Replace instead when the porcelain is cracked, parts are unavailable, it has been rebuilt repeatedly, or it blocks constantly despite a clear line.

Does the plumber supply the toilet or do I buy it?

Either works, and it is worth deciding before you collect quotes so the numbers compare. Buying your own gives you the model you want and a clear view of the fixture cost; having the plumber supply it usually means the fixture is covered by their warranty alongside the labor. What matters more is measuring the rough-in first - standard is 12 inches from the finished wall to the closet bolts, but 10 and 14 inch exist.

How much does it cost to move a toilet to a different spot?

It is a different project, not a replacement, and published replacement averages do not cover it. Moving a toilet means rerouting the waste line and the vent, and on the slab foundations common across the Dallas area that means breaking and patching concrete, with the post-tension cables located first. Price it as part of a bathroom remodel and get it scoped on site.
