How Much Does A Plumber Cost?

Hourly rate, service call fee, flat rate - three different pricing models, and the one you are quoted changes what the number means.

By the Dallas Best Plumber Editorial TeamLast updated October 2026

Fixr.com puts plumber rates at a typical $75 to $150 per hour with a $90 national average, within a $45 to $200 band by experience level, plus $50 to $300 for the initial service call. Inch Calculator's guide gives $50 to $200 per hour and a $150 to $500 service call. Emergency and after-hours work carries a premium on top of whichever rate applies.

Published Plumber Rates (With Sources)

We are a free referral service, not a plumbing company - we do not set prices and we never publish a price as our own. Below is what two independent cost-data publishers report nationally, named and linked with their dates. They disagree, particularly on the service call fee, which is useful to know before you treat any single figure as the going rate.

Three Pricing Models, And Why The Hourly Rate Can Mislead

The reason published hourly rates are such a poor predictor of a final bill is that a large share of residential plumbing is not sold by the hour at all. There are three models in common use and they behave very differently.

Time and materials is the classic model: an hourly rate plus parts, often with a minimum charge or a first-hour rate that is higher than subsequent hours. It is the fairest model on a job whose scope is genuinely unknown - a leak nobody has located yet - and the riskiest on a job that turns out to be complicated, because the risk sits with you.

Flat-rate or task pricing quotes a single price per job from a book, regardless of how long it takes. Most larger residential companies work this way. Its advantage is certainty, and that the plumber absorbs the risk of a stubborn fitting. Its disadvantage is that a quick job carries the same price as a slow one, and the implied hourly rate on a simple task can look high. Neither model is a trick; they allocate risk differently.

The service call or diagnostic fee is the third element, and it is the one that causes the most friction because it is often misunderstood. It covers getting a licensed tradesperson to your door and diagnosing the problem, whether or not you proceed. Fixr puts it at $50 to $300, splitting that into $50 to $150 for a journeyman and $150 to $300 for a master plumber; Inch Calculator's figure is higher at $150 to $500 nationally. Crucially, many companies waive or credit it if you hire them for the repair - so always ask, because that single question can change the comparison between two bids.

What Drives Your Bill Beyond The Rate

Two homeowners paying the same hourly rate can get very different invoices. These are the factors that account for it, roughly in order of impact.

  • Access. This is the biggest and least-discussed factor. A fitting in an open garage wall and the same fitting in a tight attic above a second-floor ceiling are the same part and a completely different labor figure. Anything that has to be opened up - drywall, tile, concrete - adds time twice, once to open and once to make good.
  • Diagnosis time. A visible drip is quick. A leak somewhere in a slab, or intermittent low pressure, can take hours to locate before any repair starts. Leak detection equipment is a separate line item in many cases.
  • Parts, and whether they are standard. A common cartridge is inexpensive and on the truck. An obsolete valve for a discontinued fixture may mean a supply-house trip, a special order, or replacing the whole fixture.
  • When you call. Fixr puts the emergency hourly rate at $150 plus a $200 to $300 flat call-out and a $50 to $200 transportation fee; Inch Calculator puts the off-hours premium at $50 to $100 per hour over normal. Nothing is cheaper at 2am.
  • Experience level on the job. Fixr's own breakdown runs from $20 to $40 an hour for an apprentice to $70 to $200 for a master plumber. Complex and code-sensitive work needs the higher end, and sending the right person is usually cheaper than sending the cheap one twice.
  • Permits and inspection, where the work requires them - water heaters, gas lines, sewer work and repipes typically do in this area.
  • Whether you batch the work. Mobilization is a fixed cost. Having three small jobs done in one visit is materially cheaper than three visits, and this is the easiest saving available to most homeowners.
  • Code-required upgrades that come with a replacement - an expansion tank, a pan and drain, a shut-off that does not exist yet. These are not padding; they are what makes the install pass inspection.

Published Figures For Common Jobs

Because so much residential work is priced per task rather than per hour, published per-job figures are often more useful than a rate. These are from the same two sources, with their dates.

How To Compare Quotes Properly

Comparing plumbing bids on the bottom line alone is how people end up paying twice. Ask every bidder the same set of questions and the comparison becomes real.

  1. Ask which pricing model this is: flat rate for the task, or time and materials with a rate and an estimate. Comparing one of each is comparing nothing.
  2. Ask whether there is a service call or diagnostic fee, and whether it is waived or credited if you proceed. Fixr puts it at $50 to $300 and Inch Calculator at $150 to $500 - it is large enough to decide a comparison.
  3. Ask what is included and what is explicitly excluded - parts, permit, inspection, making good any opening, hauling the old unit away.
  4. Ask what happens if they find something else once it is open, and get the contingency priced rather than described.
  5. Ask about the warranty on labor separately from the warranty on parts, and how long each runs.
  6. Ask whether they are licensed in Texas and insured, and get the license number. Plumbing in Texas is licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, and you can verify a license with the board.
  7. If more than one thing needs doing, ask for the price of doing it all in one visit.
  8. Get it in writing before work starts. A verbal number is not a quote.

Where Cheap Is Expensive

There is a real difference between a fair price and the lowest number, and in this trade the gap usually sits in one of a few predictable places. A quote that comes in well under the others is worth understanding rather than simply accepting.

The common explanations are: the permit and inspection are not in it, the restoration of whatever has to be opened is not in it, the work is being done by someone unlicensed, the parts are the cheapest available rather than the right ones, or the scope is narrower than the other bidders' - a spot repair where everyone else quoted the section that actually needs replacing. On gas and sewer work in particular, the missing permit is the one to ask about directly.

The other place it shows up is diagnosis. A plumber who clears a recurring main line blockage without ever putting a camera in it has sold you the cheap visit and left you the expensive problem. The same is true of a water heater replaced without a new expansion tank, or a sewer spot-repaired where the camera showed the whole run was failing.

None of this argues for paying the highest price. It argues for comparing like with like, which is what the question list above is for. And it argues for getting more than one quote on anything substantial - which is free, and which on a job in the thousands is the best-value hour you will spend.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a plumber cost per hour?

Fixr.com (updated January 30, 2025) gives a typical range of $75 to $150 per hour with a $90 national average, and a wider $45 to $200 band across experience levels - $20 to $40 for an apprentice, $45 to $90 for a journeyman, $70 to $200 for a master. Inch Calculator's 2026 guide gives $50 to $200 per hour. These are third-party national figures, not our prices and not DFW-specific.

Why do plumbers charge a service call fee?

It covers getting a licensed tradesperson to your door and diagnosing the problem whether or not you proceed. Fixr puts it at $50 to $300 - $50 to $150 for a journeyman, $150 to $300 for a master - and Inch Calculator at $150 to $500. The important question is whether it is waived or credited if you hire them for the repair, because many companies do that and it changes any comparison between bids.

How much does an emergency plumber cost?

More than normal hours, by every published source. Fixr.com puts the emergency hourly rate at $150, plus a flat call-out fee of $200 to $300 and a transportation fee of $50 to $200. Inch Calculator puts the off-hours premium at $50 to $100 per hour on top of the normal rate, and Fixr's sewer guide cites a $45 to $200 premium for evening, weekend and holiday calls.

Is flat-rate or hourly pricing better for me?

They allocate risk differently rather than one being a trick. Flat rate gives you certainty and puts the risk of a stubborn job on the plumber, but a quick task carries the same price as a slow one. Time and materials is fairer on work whose scope is genuinely unknown, like an unlocated leak, but the risk of it taking longer sits with you. What matters is not comparing one of each as if they were the same.

How do I know a plumbing quote is fair?

Get more than one, and make sure each covers the same scope. Ask every bidder the same questions: flat rate or hourly, is there a diagnostic fee and is it credited, are the permit and inspection included, who makes good anything that has to be opened, what happens if they find something else, and what is the labor warranty. Also verify the license - Texas plumbers are licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
